JACE ALLOWED HIMSELF to be enveloped in Merek’s arms even as his face

flushed from the way the others looked at them. He couldn’t help but think that if they

managed to get rid of Erikson, then maybe it would be safe to stay here, to claim his

mate.

He inhaled deeply and pushed those thoughts aside. There were more important

things to consider. Cory needed to be helped so that he could find some measure of

peace.

The door opening interrupted his quiet musings. Everyone turned to find Jacob

standing in the doorway.

Jacob was as tall as Jace but more built and broader-shouldered. His silver hair

was cut short and fell in choppy layers that barely touched his ears. The scowl he

directed at Jace as he pushed his sunglasses up onto his head was telling. Jacob’s

swirling mercury eyes were a mirror of Jace’s, and they were not happy at that moment.

Jacob’s gaze scanned the room. His nostrils flared, and his brow creased into a

frown. Confusion and a thread of panic flowed out from him.

“Jacob?” Jace reached out through their link. “What’s wrong?”

“I thought I smelled…” Jacob scanned the room again. “Never mind.”

Merek had tensed behind him and tightened his arms until Jace almost couldn’t

breath. “Calm down,” Jace whispered, pushing aside his concern about his brother’s

strange actions.

“What the hell, Jace?” Jacob seemed to snap out of his odd behavior and snarled.

“Some bitchy woman nearly snapped my head off at the rinky-dink town diner when I

stopped for coffee.”

Everyone in the room snickered. “Tall redhead?” Jace asked.

“Yes. She wanted to know if we were colonizing now.” Jacob rolled his eyes. “Oh,

and to tell you it wasn’t over. What did you do? I barely escaped without claw marks.”

As if realizing there were other people in the room, Jacob took a look around. His

gaze was skeptical until it landed on Emma. Her very presence softened his features.

This was the side of Jacob he only revealed to those he cared about.

“Nana,” Jacob said and moved to pick her up off the floor and envelop her in a

bear hug.

“You’ve cut off your hair.” Emma’s eyes were wide with outrage, and Jace had to

muffle a laugh. Jacob was in deep shit. Emma had a thing about their hair.

“Now, Nana. It will grow back.”

“If you’re just going to let it grow back, then why cut it in the first place?” she

huffed.

Jacob chuckled and pulled the wrap off Emma’s hair to release the beautiful wave

of silver-and-white locks that had been concealed. The thick strands cascaded around

her shoulders and swept down her back to settle at her hips. Merek’s eyes widened into

a shocked expression—a reaction that was emulated throughout the room.

Jace knew his nana was a lovely woman. No matter how much time passed, she

continued to attempt to hide her beauty, to save that part of herself for his grandfather.

To Jace that devotion was daunting and enviable.

“We can’t all pull off your bohemian look,” Jacob teased before he turned

narrowed eyes on Jace again, then flicked his gaze back to Merek.
